ABOUT US

FIONA's been a creative feature writer and magazine editor for over 30 years. She's relished freelancing for some top titles in Aotearoa and the UK, including The Sunday Times, AA Directions magazine, North & South, New Zealand Geographic, Air New Zealand's Kia Ora magazine, NZ Listener and The Independent on Sunday. She's also worked with some stellar corporates on internal and external comms, helping them shine just a little bit brighter, including for several years as editor and writer of Sealord's in-house magazine. She takes great pride in finding the magic in things that others might miss, getting the stories out there that deserve to be told, and telling them in an engaging way.

TIM established himself in the UK as a freelance photographer for daily national newspapers including The Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, the Independent and the Guardian, shooting everything from hard news to feature pictures. These days he's The New Zealand Herald's regular photographer for news events in the top of the South, but he's equally recognised for his creative magazine work with titles such as North & South, AA Directions, Kia Ora magazine and New Zealand Geographic, for which he's won awards along the way. In 2024 he became one of the select group of drone photographers of Amazing Aerial, the foremost aerial image library, supplying photos and videos to some of the world's top publications and broadcasters. Corporate clients relying on him for innovative and eye-catching content include Sealord, Consumer NZ, Port Nelson and Nelson City Council. His foray into film stems back to his work on set as a stills photographer for the BBC, which gave him a fresh insight into shooting portraits and video under very strict time pressure.

WHAT SOME OF OUR CLIENTS SAY

Jo Wane, Deputy Editor

North & South

"Fiona and Tim were my dream freelancing team in the South Island during my time as deputy editor at North & South magazine (2008-2020), either for the full package of words and photos, or independently as was needed. Their work was always to a high standard of professionalism, delivered on deadline and to brief.

Fiona has a particular strength in telling "people stories", reflecting her sense of curiosity and engagement with what's happening in the world around her.

Tim's photography (and video-making) is pure quality, from more intimate profile shots to his news coverage of the Nelson wildfires.

Above all, they were both an absolute pleasure to deal with, and I often had positive feedback from the people they'd interviewed or photographed for the magazine."

Jenny Nicholls, Art Director

North & South

“As Art Director at North & South magazine, I was always on the lookout for photographers outside of Auckland. We were lucky to have Tim Cuff in Nelson – he covered a wide range of stories in the top half of the South Island for us, from portraits to landscapes and reportage.

Tim is a hugely versatile, experienced and creative photographer, never cheesy or cliched in his approach.

I really appreciated Tim's reliable cheeriness and professionalism. He is active too – no track or hut was too remote!”

Kath Webster, Editor

AA Directions Magazine

"Fiona and Tim have delivered many memorable stories for AA Directions over the years. Utterly reliable and professional, they always come through, with well-researched, well-written stories and top quality photographs.

I have found real advantage to commissioning words and images together; the collaborative approach to projects somehow translates to highly authentic, insightful pieces. I also appreciate their collective strength as generators of ideas!

They're responsive, creative, interested and inspired by life around them, qualities that shine through in their work."

Doug Paulin,

Sealord CEO

“I have had the pleasure of working with both Fiona and Tim over my ten years at Sealord, both individually and as a team.  Whilst they are both technical experts in their respective fields, which in itself is an asset to any business, I have found they are even more powerful as a team.

The benefit of having them collaborate on projects where they bounce ideas and concepts off each other inevitably means that you get a much better result than you would otherwise. A classic example of one plus one equalling more than two.

I would unreservedly recommend them to anyone using storytelling as a tool to influence or communicate within their business or undertaking.”

Jennie Harrison

Port Nelson, Marketing

"l worked with Tim and Fiona on a multitude of projects on varying topics while at Port Nelson. The process for writing stories and capturing the right images was always smooth, they nailed the brief, delivered on time and most of all it was an enjoyable experience.

Tim and Fiona are truly a dynamic duo! Fiona's superpower is making all interviewees feel comfortable in the research process and finding that thread that sews a story together, making what to some would be a mundane topic into a fascinating piece of writing.

I've worked with Tim on land and at sea, from shipping yards and corporate offices to mega cruises and pilot boats. Tim has an impeccable skill of capturing action and emotion and bringing a story to life in all his photos. His working style leaves everyone at ease, and he blends into the environment, allowing him to capture natural photos of people doing what they do best."

James Frankham, Editor

NZ Geographic

“Together Tim and Fiona have contributed to five

feature stories in New Zealand Geographic, each of

which are demanding undertakings.

They take pride in their work, are creative and bring a lot to the table. A pleasure to work with."
